Course Description:
The Air Conditioning Service and Troubleshooting course focuses on teaching the foundational knowledge that must be understood in order to properly troubleshoot and diagnose issues in residential and light commercial A/C systems. This comprehensive one-day course combines essential A/C operating fundamentals with practical, real-world troubleshooting techniques that technicians can immediately apply in the field. Students will learn how to evaluate the complete system rather than simply replacing parts or relying on pressures alone, with particular emphasis on systematic diagnosis, electrical schematics, accurate meter measurements, airflow, and refrigerant-side operating conditions.
Topics include:
- Understanding the refrigeration cycle and major A/C components
- Systematic troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures
- Reading and using HVAC wiring diagrams and electrical schematics
- Proper multimeter use and electrical testing techniques
- Compressors, fan motors, contactors, capacitors, relays, TXVs, and other metering devices
- Proper airflow and its effect on system performance
- Using pressures, temperatures, superheat, and subcooling correctly
- Compressor amp-draw analysis and overall system performance evaluation
- Distinguishing electrical, airflow, and refrigerant-related problems to avoid common misdiagnoses
Real-world troubleshooting examples and field scenarios are used throughout the course to help students understand not only what to test, but why they are testing it, what the expected result should be, and what the measurement actually proves. Practical tips and troubleshooting strategies based on years of actual field experience are incorporated throughout the class, with an emphasis on helping technicians diagnose problems accurately, work more efficiently, and reduce unnecessary callbacks.
