About Special Olympics

Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) is one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world with nearly 45,000 registered athletes who train and compete in year-round programs in 20 different sports.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

Why We Volunteer

"Watching the athletes’ determination and joy reminded me of the profound difference volunteers can make in creating inclusive and supportive environments. Volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about sharing skills, compassion, and a commitment to making the world a better place."

-Ashley Davoli, TAA PR & Community Outreach Committee Co-Chair
