Political Endorsements... How you can get involved!

Posted By: Dustin Engelken Government Affairs,

Last month, members of the TAA Government Affairs Committee had the opportunity to interview nearly twenty political candidates. After a thorough review process, nine candidates from across the Triangle were selected to receive the endorsement of the Association, as well as a contribution from TAA-PAC (see the full list here). As a follow-up to the endorsement process, we wanted to offer a number of ways that our members can get involved in helping to elect our slate of candidates.

Host a Candidate Meet-and-Greet

Political candidates are always looking for ways to meet voters, and your apartment communities are home to thousands of voters across the region, making them a target-rich environment for candidates. Hosting a meet-and-greet event is an easy way to get candidates to visit your property and allow you to showcase your property and staff while providing a unique event for your residents.

Invite Candidates to Community Events

If you’re not able to host a Candidate Meet-and-Greet, there are still opportunities to have candidates visit your property. If you’re already hosting a barbecue, a holiday event, or any other kind of community event, feel free to extend the invitation to our candidates to give them an opportunity to visit your community and meet your residents without the hassle of organizing a separate event.

Allow Campaigns to Canvass

One of the easiest ways to support our candidates is to give access to their campaigns to canvass your community. Candidates and their volunteers often go door-to-door in an attempt to meet voters and leave behind campaign literature. However, because most communities have no solicitation policies, our residents often miss out on contact with these campaigns. Allowing a campaign to canvass your property helps to build the relationship and can be immensely helpful for the candidate.

Display Yard Signs or other Campaign Materials

Whether you manage an apartment community, or a Main Street business, displaying yard or window signs is a great way to show that your business stands with TAA in support of a candidate and can offer great exposure to your residents or customers.

Volunteer for a Campaign

Political campaigns rely heavily on volunteers to canvass neighborhoods, call neighbors and distribute yard signs and campaign literature. Volunteering for a campaign is a great way to work locally to help a candidate out and will often offer a great opportunity to work with and get to know the candidate personally—a relationship that could greatly help your business out later.

Donate to Candidates

The TAA-PAC is already making campaign contributions to all of our endorsed candidates, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also make individual contributions! Elections are expensive and candidates are always looking for money to help get them across the finish line. Campaign contributions are a great way to help these candidates meet the needs of the campaign while helping you to build the relationship with future legislators.

There are many ways to get involved and the list above is by no means exhaustive, but it does offer some simple ideas for your business or apartment community to get involved in supporting TAA’s endorsed candidates. If you’re interested in participating, or would like additional information on our endorsed candidates, please feel free to contact TAA’s Government Affairs Director, Dustin Engelken at DEngelken@triangleaptassn.org or by phone at 919-782-1165 ext. 4.
